DANCERS IN RESIDENCE

The Classes:

Solo Jazz with Daniil: «Performance Class»

January  17th – March 7th (8 x 75 Minutes)
Wednesdays: 20:15 – 21:30
About: This is all about expression. In this class, you will explore interesting rhythms and melodies, different steps and their variations and, last but not least, individual ways of hearing the music and expressing it through movement. Learn the logic of transitioning between move(ment)s, widen the musicality-horizon and get performance experience since you will be able to perform the result of your intensive work with Daniil at the farewell-party.
Requirements: This class is open to intermediate or advanced Solo Jazz dancers or alternatively dancers with experience in other similar dance styles. You have to be willing to practice between the classes and do extra rehearsals for the show.
Place: Festsaal des CVJM – Wien, Kenyongasse 15 (1.Stock), 1070 Wien
Price: Early Bird: 145,-/125,-/105,- Lazy Bird: 180,-

Lindy Solo with Maria: «Follow Yourself»

January  17th – March 7th (8 x 75 Minutes)
Wednesdays: 18:45 – 20:00
About: In Lindy Hop classes, the focus is often on the communicative part and the dynamics of leading and following in the dance. However, especially for followers it is important to know their own possibilities to be creative. So in this class, Maria will work with you on body movement: she will show you how to warm up and stretch, help you with your coordination and stay-ability and do solo jazz practice exercises with you. Then you will focus on footwork variations in Lindy Hop. But rather than just memorizing some particular moves, she will help you understand the principles of variating so you can start creating many of those variations on your own.
Requirements: For intermediate and higher-level Lindy Hop followers.
Place: Festsaal des CVJM – Wien, Kenyongasse 15 (1.Stock), 1070 Wien
Price: Early Bird: 145,-/125,-/105,- Lazy Bird: 180,-

Lindy Hop Base: «The Complexity of Simplicity»

January  18th – March 8th (8 x 75 Minutes)
Thursdays: 18:45 – 20:00
About: Most of us have experienced, in dancing or otherwise, that something which seemed really easy at one point proved to be much more complex when our understanding of it deepened. In this course, Daniil and Maria will address exactly this topic in Lindy Hop. They will take you on a journey into the depths of the basic principles of couple dancing: solo technique, communication and styling. Developing your abilities in these areas will rapidly increase the level of confidence you have in your dancing (which is more often than not what makes the difference between a mid-level dancer and an advanced one).
Requirements: For intermediate and intermediate-advanced dancers. The kind of work done in this course is certainly very productive for higher levels as well.
Place: Veranstaltungssaal in der Gentzgasse 22-24, 1180 Wien
Price: Early Bird: 145,-/125,-/105,- Lazy Bird: 180,-

Lindy Hop Slow & Fast: «Feel the Difference»

January  18th – March 8th (8 x 75 Minutes)
Thursdays: 20:15 – 21:30
About: It’s sometimes hard to say which tempo is more difficult to dance to: fast or slow. Often, students get stuck in the mid-tempo range songs and are afraid to explore further in either direction. In this class, Daniil and Maria will teach you technique and give you tips that will help with any DJ’s choices. How they themselves say: “If you have your timing right, you’ll be able to dance to any song perfectly. Timing is the key to everything”.
Requirements: For intermediate-advanced dancers and higher levels.
Place: Veranstaltungssaal in der Gentzgasse 22-24, 1180 Wien
Price: Early Bird: 145,-/125,-/105,- Lazy Bird: 180,-

Lindy Hop Figure Variations: «Think Outside of the Box»

January  16th – March 6th (8 x 75 Minutes)
Tuesdays: 18:45 – 20:00
About: This is the place where Daniil and Maria share their very personal approach to Lindy Hop. This is how they themselves describe what they want to do with you in this class: “For us there are principles of how our Lindy works. We will work with you on understanding figures from the perspective of their different aspects like momentum, footwork structure, directions and condition of contact to be able to create something of your own. We will not feed you with one fish every class, we will give you the fishing rod.”
Requirements: For advanced and advanced plus dancers.
Place: Festsaal des CVJM – Wien, Kenyongasse 15 (1.Stock), 1070 Wien
Price: Early Bird: 145,-/125,-/105,- Lazy Bird: 180,-

Lindy Hop Performance Group: «Creativity in Showing Off»

January  16th – March 6th (8 x 75 Minutes)
Tuesdays: 20:15 – 21:30
About: Daniil and Maria have made the transition from dancing the dance to performing the dance and know where the differences lie. In this class, they will introduce you to their understanding of kick-ass dancing in competitions, jams and for your own performance pieces. They will work with you on topics like dancing with a high sense of musicality by understanding composition, being self-confident and cool by doing less and getting proper jam circle practice before performing at the farewell-party. They will help you to create some impressive prepared content to have up your sleeve for jams and competitions but also cover further themes relating to the artistic aspects of Lindy Hop.
Requirements: For advanced and advanced plus dancers. For this course you are required to register with a fixed partner. There will be NO partner rotation. You have to be willing to practice between the classes and do extra rehearsals for the show.

ABOUT :

뽈 / Suyeon Oh

(Gyunwoo & Suyeon Oh)

길 / Gil Seong Bin Park

Our next Dancers In Residence:

FlyerWeb_DIR#4-AnnRyan_front

We are very happy to have these two amazing dancers come to Vienna from October till November 2015 to share their  knowledge and passion of swing dancing. Ryan and Ann are known for their creative and innovative dance vocabulary as well as for their profound and inspiring teaching of Lindy Hop.

Watch these two dancers in action and start getting excited NOW!

Ryan Calloway shines on the dance floor. His enthusiasm, buoyant rhythm and boundless creativity inspires other dancers to fall in love with dancing and find their own creativity as well. With an open and warm style, he welcomes individuals to not only learn the traditions of Vintage Jazz Dance, but to add to it as well. Ryan is also passionate about carrying on the tradition of Hot Jazz music. He is the clarinetist and bandleader of the San Francisco based band, The Hot Baked Goods . Give it a listen!

Ann Mony is an award-winning lindy hop dancer, teacher, and choreographer who blogs about it all on Feets of Jazz . Ann grew her skills as a dance teacher after falling madly in love with swing dancing in 2000. Known for her playful style and the joy that she exudes while dancing, Ann shares her love of the dance in workshops, competitions, performances, and on the social dance floor. Ann was a founding member of the DC Cherry Blossoms, an all-female solo charleston team, and was proud to be a member of various lindy hop teams in Montreal, including the always-inspiring Northern Lights.

Find out more about Erin & Nathan…

Mai 012014

Erin Morris

Erin Morris is a nationally-acclaimed jazz artist with an uncanny mix of wild creativity, stunning poise and remarkable stage presence. As founding member and lead-choreographer of Erin Morris & Her Ragdolls, Erin has sparked a local resurgence in the popular chorus girl traditions of the Jazz and Swing eras.

Whether teaching or performing, Erin is one of the most pivotal figures in the Michigan dance scene. Erin honors the tradition of the dances she teaches without losing sight of innovation or personal expression, and her love of solo movement gives her a unique artistry and playful confidence. In addition to dancing, she studies and performs on her jazz tuba with the Easy Street Jazz Band alongside the best Dixieland musicians in Michigan.

As a group, Erin Morris & Her Ragdolls present and promote the relationship between music and dance by performing almost exclusively with live musicians. They are regularly featured performers at NOLA Girl Jam, and they also perform annually on the renowned Michigan Theater stage for the “Ragtime Extravaganza!” show.

Since 1999, Erin has taught for the University of Michigan – Swing Ann Arbor and greatly enjoys investing in her local lindy hop community. She has also taught at national events, like Lindy Diversion in Denver, CO and Hooverville Stomp in Oberlin, OH. With strengths in raw, unique movement, poetic yet simple breakdowns, and an overall conversational teaching-style, it’s easy to see why Erin is always a crowd favorite at workshops.

Nathan Bugh

Nathan “Soft Shoe” Bugh has been an international dance instructor and show stopping performer for over a decade, won countless competitions, performed in film, television and theater productions, shines as a member of the famous Killer Dillers and is, above all, a passionate dance teacher.

Nathan has a well documented track history of living and contributing to the Lindy Hop community at large. Nathan’s style and his musical access to jazz movement expresses something vibrant and very unique, revisiting the spirit of the original dancers of the Savoy Ballroom. We think that this aspect of Nathan’s dance understanding has not yet found the spotlight it deserves.

Inviting Nathan Bugh to Vienna for the Dancers In Residence program (DIR#3), represents a kind of exception to our general rule (the DIR-concept is focused on promoting and supporting less well-known, up & coming dancers rather than established and/or famous figures in the dance community as Nathan), but we are sure that you’ll agree he has a lot to offer!

You can find more information and interesting texts about and from Nathan on www.jazzasmovement.com/ or just take an entertaining journey on youtube.

We proudly announce our second edition of the “Dancers in Residence” – program with:

Christian Frommelt & Jenny Shirar

DIR2-Jenni-Chris-KLEIN-ohne

“What thrills me about Christian and Jenny is their dedication to local styles in St. Louis. As Lindy becomes more universal and more dominant, it also is becoming homogeneous and destructive to regional styles. By focusing on St. Louis, and taking to original dancers, Christian and Jenny are conserving the detail, the grit, and the meaning of the dance–and they are also great, great teachers!”
Nathan Bugh

With this words we think everything is said. It is our mission with the DIR-program to support Dancers with a special style and unique access to the core of the dance. In this context Christian Frommelt and Jennifer Shirar were often recommended by other professional and international Lindy Hop Instructors. We are glad to have them here for two month to inspire the Viennese and European scene.

They caught our attention for the first time with their showcase at the ILHC 2011, for us one of the most “creative” performances of recent years. but also at the J&Js and other showcases they impress with a very unstressed and casual yet at the same time highly intent and creative dance style.

recent ranks:
1st Place – Slow Dance Couples ESDC 2012
2nd Place – Solo Charleston Camp Jitterbug 2012
1st Place – All-Star Jack & Jill at Lone Star Championships 2011
1st Place – Strictly Blues at Lone Star Championships 2011

Michael “Dargoff” Darigol wants you to do the lindy hop. He has been dancing and performing in the swing dance community since 2003. Dargoff travels far and wide to perform, compete and social dance. With a clear passion and love for the dance he has volunteered his time to promote lindy hop locally, nationally and internationally, and serve as an organizer for multiple events. Since 2007, he has been teaching dance in the Seattle area. His instruction ranges from Lindy Hop and Charleston, to Solo Authentic Jazz and Blues.
Although he has spent a great deal of time and effort training and practicing, it’s regular social dancing that keeps his dancing tuned. While on the social floor, jazz and athleticism exude as Dargoff displays the passion, joy and humor of his unique lindy hop style. http://www.dargoff.com

Brittany Johnson began dancing in Seattle in 2004 and has been hooked ever since, dancing and competing locally, nationally and internationally. she has been teaching in the Seattle area since 2008. she is known for bringing a playful attitude, unique style and athleticism to the social dance floor, the performance stage, and in all of her classes. Brittany offers instruction in Swing Dancing, Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Authentic Jazz Movement. even though she has devoted countless hours to practicing and improving, her true passion lies on the social dance floor, where her creativity and joy shine.
