Dancer in Residence #8

Gaby Cook & Nathan Bugh

DIR#8: 18.2. – 14.4.2019:

We are very excited to have Gaby Cook & Nathan Bugh as our next Dancers In Residence (DIR#8) from February 18 to April 14 here in Vienna!

For us these two dancers are among the best in the contemporary Lindy Hop and Authentic Jazz Dance field!

Although the usual policy of the DIR#-program is to rather support upcoming yet unknown dancers and teachers, we couldn’t miss the chance to invite these two extraordinary dancers to Vienna (again)!

About Gaby

About

Nathan and Gaby have been dancing and teaching lindy/vernacular jazz for over 20 years. Nathan in particular has studied the dance’s history. He worked to publish the unpublished Spirit Moves, reviewing Mura’s reel-to-reel footage, her estate documents, and her unpublished book of the same title. He has taken class from luminaries, like Franky Manning, George and Sugar Sullivan, Margaret Batiuchok, Chester Whitmore, Norma Miller, Dawn Hampton, Ernest “brownie” Brown, and Robert Reed – the grandson of Maceo Anderson and protege of Prince Spencer and Pegleg Bates. He also spent most of his lindy career learning steps from old movies. As New York residents, Gaby and Nathan are confronted by the ever-changing definition and social meaning of the dance, in each of the diverse city’s communities. In this class they will share their thoughts and experiences; with tips for teaching the dance to beginners, intermediate dancers, and to advanced dancers; tips for teaching the dance in public spaces with large crowds; and examples of how the dance has changed, or can change, and how to preserve diversity of style.
